Doris Day’s Lipstick Fades Away

DORIS DAY’S LIPSTICK FADES AWAY….by Mary Anne Barothy, author of Day at a Time: An Indiana Girl’s Sentimental Journey to Doris Day’s Hollywood and Beyond

Who would think one could get attached to lipstick? Well, I did when I was Doris’s personal secretary, living in her home.  For more than 40 years, I have used Revlon’s Moon Drops # 708 Apple Polish lipstick.  Why?  Because it was the lipstick that my boss Doris Day used and I used it too.  Being a California girl at the time, I found Apple Polish  went with everything and I always bought a couple at a time to have on hand.  If Doris used it,  I had it, too!  Had been a Doris Day fan since age 10 and even though I was working and living with her, the “fan” in me was still very much alive!

It’s been years since I worked for Doris, but often when I put the lipstick on, I thought of Doris, and of course fondly.  As you can imagine, she always glowed with or without lipstick….she was such a natural beauty.

Several months ago I went to a local drugstore to purchase a couple tubes of Apple Polish # 708.  As I scanned the Revlon aisle, I looked for the green case and seemed to find everything but #708.  At first I thought they must be out of it as it was such a popular color.  I went to a second drugstore and no Apple Polish!  Finally, after not finding my #708 Apple Polish at a third store, I decided to contact Revlon and inquire about the availability of purchasing #708.  I e-mailed them and was not prepared for their response!

Appdayattimearently, Revlon made a decision to put my dear ‘Apple Polish’ to rest….was I upset?  Yes, a little, because this was a distant connection with a the lady I have loved and admired all these years…nearly 60  now.  However,  I have recovered—nothing lasts forever.   Have been experimenting with other shades, but there will never be anything  like the old #708 Apple Polish…the lipstick Doris Day wore.  RIP # 708!
